    Training on Resource Efficiency in the Food Sector

    TÜBİTAK MRC HOSTED TRAINING ON EFFICIENCY PRACTICES IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY.

    Istanbul Chamber of Industry and TÜBİTAK MRC Environment and Cleaner Production Institute jointly carried out Training on Efficiency Practices in the Food Sector” on December 22, 2016.

    The training at TÜBİTAK MRC Conference Hall was attended by the representatives of the Directorate General of Productivity of the Ministry of Science, Industry, Technology, Federation of Food and Drink Industry Associations of Turkey, Packaged Milk and Dairy Products Association, Directorate of Environment and Preservation of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Ankara University, Gebze Technical University Technology Transfer Office, various institutions and organizations and also company officials from Ülker Gıda, Halk Ekmek A.Ş., and HERO Gıda.

    Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Baban, the Senior Researcher of TÜBİTAK MRC Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, made an opening speech informing the participants about the institute’s structure, activities, and efforts. He emphasized that the institute could undertake joint projects with the public and private sector and that they were ready for cooperation.

    Following the opening speech, Dr. Şeyma Karahan, Senior Researcher of TÜBİTAK MRC Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, explained the institute’s cleaner production activities and the project “Prediction of Resource Efficiency Potential in the Manufacturing Industry” supported by the Directorate General of Productivity of the MSIT. She stated that they visited approximately 170 enterprises in various sectors including the food sector as part of the project. She added that they estimated the energy, water, and raw material saving potential for Turkey's manufacturing industry. emphasizing the importance of this study in protecting environmental resources. Dr. Karahan stated that cleaner production opportunities and applicability for the yeast and iron and steel sectors were determined in the project "Determination of Cleaner Production Opportunities and Applicability in the Industry" supported by the Directorate General of Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning. However, she also noted that draft legislation was also completed.

    İlknur Menlik, Secretary General of the Federation of Food and Drink Industry Associations of Turkey (TGDF), presented awareness-raising information on agricultural efficiency and sustainability.

    In the following presentations Prof. Dr. Nevzat Artık (AÜ), Assoc. Prof. Coşkun Aydıner (GTU), Murat ŞANLI (AHE), Gürol Oktay (HERO Gıda), Ahmet Burak Başpınar (ÜLKER Gıda) shared sustainability and efficiency projects on cleaner production in the food sector as well as the benefits with participants.
